The Joachim-und-Susanne-Schulz-Stiftung in Amorbach in Lower Franconia is one of the largest private foundations in Germany and is involved in communities, the arts, science and education. The “Villa Schulz” serves as the new headquarters of the foundation and is an imposing house from the time around 1910 with a high mansard roof. The architects Ecker Architekten from Heidelberg extensively renovated the house in the previous years and fundamentally remodelled it for the new use. From a patchwork that had arisen over decades, a new overall view, coherent throughout, was created that is continued into the furnishings.
The events room for the foundation is on the main floor. It is oriented towards the garden side and was created by combining three rooms that were originally separate. It is used for readings, concerts and seminars. If needed, smaller units, corresponding to the original rooms, can be separated off from the room using yellow-green curtains with a matt sheen. The offices for the foundation are housed on the upper floor, while living quarters for scholarship holders have been installed in the loft area. The basement area meanwhile was converted into a garden level with significantly larger windows. In the future, it is intended to run exhibitions here. Furthermore, this level houses the bathroom facilities for the events operation.
The complete interior work overseen by Ecker Architekten creates a bright and clear atmosphere. All interior surfaces and details for the interior design – with the exception of the carved balustrades and the ceiling in the foyer – were completely redesigned for this, including wainscoting, wall coverings, door casings, plaster mouldings and mirrors. Fitting to this, light switches from the LS 1912 program from JUNG in classic brass were used. The modern toggle lever switches in real metal are a homage to the year that JUNG was founded and point to the decades of experience in the company in metalworking. Due to the manual workmanship, the elegant materiality and their classic design language, they perfectly round off the interior concept of the “Villa Schulz”. To match to the toggle lever switches of the LS 1912 program, sockets, movement detectors (automatic switches) and door communication systems from JUNG were chosen in classic brass. They come from the LS 990 program. Both programs are part of the LS range and have the same device and frame sizes.
