_OPOLIS is a multidisciplinary design practice that prides itself in having stayed away from a signature style and believes that most complex and beautiful solutions are often the simplest. Working primarily in an urban context the firm’s ideology is reflected in the open-ended nature of the firm’s name with its preceding underscore. Both the principals have lived, worked and travelled extensively in Japan, Europe and America. They bring in this global education and exposure to their design diktats and are adept at blending different architectural styles and cultures with their contemporary sensibilities.
We believe that architecture is best when it is an honest expression of the people and institutions it serves, when it interacts gracefully with its surroundings, and when it has an understated dignity based on being true to the location and project requirement. Every aspect of design is questioned and revisited to evaluate its need. This involves a stripping down process, a very conscious effort, and ultimately culminates in giving simplest solutions to very complex design issues. What we call a good design is one which achieves integrity – that is, unity or wholeness – in balanced relation to its environment.
“Whatever we design must be of use, but at the same time transcend it s use. It must be rooted in time and site and client needs but it must transcend time and site and client needs.”
